Privacy Policy

Who we are

Our website address is: https://chrismichaels.ca.   Questions regarding this Privacy Policy or any other aspect of this website’s operation can be directed to the Website Administrator via e-mail at .

What personal data we collect and why we collect it

Comments

While commenting is not currently enabled on this site, if at some point in the future it is enabled, the following considerations must be kept in mind.  (We will make every effort to inform you well in advance of this feature being enabled, if it ever does happen.)

When visitors leave comments on the site we collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media

While uploading of content (media or otherwise) is not currently enabled on this site, if at some point in the future it is enabled, the following considerations must be kept in mind.  (We will make every effort to inform you well in advance of this feature being enabled, if it ever does happen.)

If you upload images to the website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Visitors to the website can download and extract any location data from images on the website.

Contact forms

This website uses the Contact Form 7 plugin on the Contact page.   To prevent abuse by spam bots, and to verify your identity as a ‘human’, this plugin makes use of the Google reCAPTCHA (v3) service in the background.   Google requires us to post links to their Privacy Policy and Terms of Service on that page, and we have reproduced them here as well.

Cookies

As previously mentioned, commenting is not enabled on this site, nor is account creation, but if they ever are, the following considerations must be kept in mind.

If you leave a comment on our site you may opt-in to saving your name, email address and website in cookies. These are for your convenience so that you do not have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year.

If you have an account and you log in to this site, we will set a temporary cookie to determine if your browser accepts cookies. This cookie contains no personal data and is discarded when you close your browser.

When you log in, we will also set up several cookies to save your login information and your screen display choices. Login cookies last for two days, and screen options cookies last for a year. If you select “Remember Me”, your login will persist for two weeks. If you log out of your account, the login cookies will be removed.

If you edit or publish an article, an additional cookie will be saved in your browser. This cookie includes no personal data and simply indicates the post ID of the article you just edited. It expires after 1 day.

Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Please consult each of the other websites’ respective Privacy Policies and Terms of Use for more details.

Analytics

Analytics (the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of web data for purposes of understanding and optimizing web usage) is not currently enabled on this site, nor do we expect to use it in the future.

Who we share your data with

Your personal data (specifically your contact information submitted on the Contact page) will NEVER be shared with any other person, company or organization.   It is only used internally, for the purposes of communicating with you, by e-mail or other means (such as phone or in-person communications).

How long we retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so we can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users that register on our website (if any), we also store the personal information they provide in their user profile. All users can see, edit, or delete their personal information at any time (except they cannot change their username). The Website Administrator can also see and edit that information.

What rights you have over your data

If you have an account on this site, or have left comments, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data we hold about you, including any data you have provided to us. You can also request that we erase any personal data we hold about you. This does not include any data we are obliged to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where we send your data

Visitor comments (if enabled) may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

Additional information

How we protect your data

This site uses a variety of security technologies to limit back-end access to only authorized users, including 2-Factor Authentication (2FA) and brute force detection.   Additionally, access to this site is only permitted using the HTTPS protocol, to protect your information during transmission to and from the site.  We also implement a range of security “best practices” with regards to password strength, administrator access/authentication, and overall administration of the website, including regular security updates to the site itself.   Any personal information is stored in a secured database with access limited only to the Website Administrator.

What data breach procedures we have in place

This site relies on a suite of automated security tools to quickly notify the Website Administrator of any possible breaches or breach attempts.  As well, all site content is securely and regularly backed up off-site for disaster recovery purposes.   If any personal data was compromised during a breach, we would make every effort to immediately notify you via e-mail, and/or via a notice on this website.

What third parties we receive data from

Other than the information you share with us voluntarily, we do not collect or solicit information from any third parties, other than a ‘confidence score’ from the Google reCAPTCHA service on our Contact page, as mentioned above.

What automated decision making and/or profiling we do with user data

None whatsoever.   Your personal data is used only to establish communications with you.

Industry regulatory disclosure requirements

As this is a personal ‘resume’ website, there are no disclosure requirements that we are aware of at this time.
